About
To finish, take a moment to reflect on a recent situation involving an autistic child or young person whose behaviour, participation, communication or wellbeing changed. Ask yourself: Did I begin with the young person’s perspective and the context around them? Did I distinguish an autistic difference from a new or concerning change? What further information would I need before assuming an explanation? And what is the safest next step within my role? The aim is not to diagnose or to view every difficulty as a co-occurring condition. It is to remain curious, notice meaningful change, reduce immediate barriers and collaborate with the young person, family and relevant professionals. Sometimes a thoughtful question, a clear observation and a timely referral can prevent an important concern from being overlooked. Before you leave, write down one question you will use in practice: “What has changed for this young person, and what might they need from us now?”
